More from the Farm

Today planted corn, broccoli,  zucchini, peas, beans &  pumpkins. Relocated/transplanted some strawberry plants, grapevines.  Repaired sprinkler lines.

Images from the Farm

Yesterday, I prepared the soil for planting. Found a bunch of eggs, the chickens all seem to want to lay where the other hens have laid. Found 11 eggs in the wood chip bag for a total of 19 eggs. I did find one of the Feb chicks dead.  Placed a heat lamp back in the coop, it is supposed to get into the 30's tonight, which could have been a cause of the chick death.

W9. March 23 - 27

I am assigning work this week through Google Classroom.  Some of the work will require you to make posts to your blogger.

Farm Update:

Since we are on lock down until May 3rd I made a decision to send the goats to Mrs. Haver's farm up near Yosemite.  Mrs. Haver and her husband drove to HHS on Saturday March 21 and picked up the goats and some chickens. She took the three Silkie chickens, the two Lavender chickens, the Red Rooster (not Rockstar), the seven new chicks that were out in front of my classroom and a couple adult hens so she can start collecting eggs.

On Tuesday I began to plant some of the seeds we had started in the trays back in February. I also had to plant corn seeds because the package they were in had gotten wet, so 160 corn seeds were planted.  Also planted were Zucchini, peas, beans, broccoli & some strawberry plants were relocated.  Also, I took down the goat fencing that ran parallel in front of the garden.

Note:  We did lose a hen Sunday night, I could not find any predator markings so am ruling this out. For the most part the flock is doing well, they are out and about on the HHS campus during the day.

On the first Monday of the shutdown the black wheel barrow was missing. I found it with three homeless guys at the recycle center on 9th street. So as of Monday March 16 all of the tools and wheel barrows are locked in the storage bin. I have also placed locks on each gate leading into the garden area.

Live Classes Cancelled Due to Coronavirus

This week started a new venture into my teaching career. For the first time in my 25 plus teaching career I am began teaching students online Today! The Covid-19 virus has began making Governors and health officials make some tough decision.  Hillside High will be without students at least until May 1, 2020.

We have been asked to social distance ourselves from one another, that is to keep at least six feet from another person. We have been asked to shelter in place for the next two weeks as the virus runs its course.

Update

The week of March 2-6 I was out with the flu. I came back to school the next Monday, March 9th. The week of March 9-13 the class was back out on the farm, though in reality the sub I had Mr. Johnson had the students go out each day to check on and feed the animals.  On Friday the 13th the remainder of the quarter was put on hold due to the Novid Coronavirus.  At the moment the district is laying plans to remote teach students through April 13. We will have no students attending classes  at HHS for the next four weeks.

This past week we had the following

Rain, Full Moon, Wind, Friday the 13, we have a pandemic and a national emergency.  A busy week.

Things out on the farm have been running smoothly.  As many of you know  Mrs. Haver moved up North and her long term sub, an awesome energetic young teacher by the name of Mrs. Cazarez.  She held down the farm while I was out sick and has been a wonderful addition to the HHS Family Farm.
