Students Place building on foundation pad

This week the students leveled an area and placed 4x4 on the ground filled with blue dg. Then the students set the building in place on top of the 4x4's Next up: The fence and gate will be built next week.

The students also removed the low walls inside the chicken coop that were installed to separate the pigs from the chicken food. We feel this is no longer needed now that we have a new area for the pigs. Also, by removing the low walls it allows for better cleaning inside the coop.

In honor of our fallen friend my construction class is building a pig area on the farm.  Today the students worked on creating a foundation to place a pig house. We are using the portable chicken coop as the new pig house. The students removed the house from the trailer it was attached to. To remove the house from the trailer the students removed the screws that connected the framework to the trailer. They then attached 2x4's to the house to lift it from the trailer. When lifted, students moved the trailer out from underneath.

Foundation Work:

The building will be placed onto the rock pad.

Potbelly Pig(s) Update

It is with a sad heart that I report we lost "Jerry" one of our potbelly pigs. Jerry stopped eating this week and would not get up on his own. A vet was called in. Jerry was given some antibiotics. Jerry passed during the evening on Friday, April 23.  His body was placed on ice and picked up early Sunday. An autopsy will be performed. At the moment we do not know the cause of death. It is suspected that he may have eaten himself to death. He had a habit of knocking over the trash can that contained the chicken feed, and the week prior the farm received a delivery of fruits and veggies that were going to go bad during spring break

RIP JERRY AKA CRISPY BACON (Jerry is the tanner of the two pigs)

Around the Farm

As mentioned in the previous post we took a Pig Pen to the UJHS carnival. The pigpen was made Monday through Wednesday before the fair! It came out pretty nice.

Since the last post on February 19, the farm classes have planted over 100 plants and I paid a visit to the LA County Fair Farm and picked up some plants. Some of the pants have actually been planted with many going in this week!

Update to the Update UJHS Carnival

What I failed to mention in the last post is that the chicks we brought to the carnival were actually hatched beginning the night before. Long story short, 20 days ago I was asked to bring some animals to the fair, I threw some eggs into the incubator. It was the last minute possible to do so. But it and they turned out well!
