Tuesday 4-27 Out in the Garden

Work continues out in the garden. Today the students built three raised garden planters. They got one completely installed, and two made and placed into place: but, we have an issue. The fence is not parallel with the block wall....and I started the raised planters against the fence with a standard length of the planter at 60".  For the build, we used existing 2 x 6's.  The photos below only show the start of the work.

We have an Olive Egger layer!!!!!!

On Saturday April 24 we had our first olive colored egg laid! I am assuming it has come from one of the November hens. There are 10 hens that hatched in November 2020.  Most are lavender in color with copper trimmings, but a couple are black and one looks like an Easter Egger hen from our own farm. Now we need to see which hen is laying the olive egg! At least five of the 10 hens are now laying.

This was the hatch back in November. A total of 20 eggs hatched. 13 were BCM brown eggs, 2 olive color eggs, 1 grey egg, two blueish egg, one light brown and, one tan. One chicken died in the first week, leaving 19. Two from our farm were developing into roosters and were given away in week 21, leaving 17. The remaining chickens consist of seven roosters and 10 hens. I am trying to determine which roosters to keep of the seven. At the moment I have narrowed it down to three. Each have characteristics that I like, I just want to make sure that they are not too aggressive with humans. I have identified one that show some aggression.

13 Chocolate

2 Olive

1 Grey

2 blueish

1 tan

1 light brown

The eggs on the right are from this weeks lay. The ones on the let are as well but they are definitely from the regulars.

Informal Meeting with Director of Food and Nutrition on HHS Farm

Today the Director of Food Services Kasenia Glen and Cassidy made a visit to the HHS Family Farm.  The two were given a tour of the facility and talked about some strategy about Farm to Fork ideas for the district.  Here's to the future!

Cassidy has started  Farm to Fork on most, if not all of the schools on the UUSD campuses.  The idea is to have the various campuses producing food for members of the community!

2021 Garden Layout

Still some modifications to come, but these were the originally planned changes to the garden for 2021. Area 10 , 12,14, will be modified as well.

Thursday 4-22

We had precipitation today, so we spent the day inside.  Today we transplanted approx 40. plants into larger containers, mostly zucchini, and cucumbers. Decommissioned two computer carts for parts. In class we also made Orange Julius and pancakes to get the wet day started.

Today, for the first time had one of the Marans roosters make an aggressive move towards me.

Got the coop camera working again. It went out on Sunday. I think a chicken may have tried to roost on the power bar and separated the cords. Plugged it in yesterday and began getting notices again.

Also, may be up to 3 of the Marans hens laying eggs now. Not as dark as I had hoped and the eggs are kind of small at the moment.
