Farm Update Jan 22- 28

This week students built a separate area in the coop to keep the pigs out of the chicken food. We also began placing a pliable orange fencing around the raised gardens to keep the chickens out. Earlier in the year we had planted broccoli and for the second time the chickens picked the plants cleaned

And for the first time since mid November we had consecutive days with more than 10 eggs laid.

Grapevines Trimmed Back this Week

Using a class that I fave been subbing for the past couple of weeks we trimmed the grapevines.

In The Coop - New Feeding Location

Over the past month the pigs have been eating the chicken feed. Today Sebastian and me built an area out of pallets to separate the pigs from the chicken feed.

Note: The Jan 4 chicks spent their first night in the coop last night. They were greeted by a tremendous wind storm. Also the power went out sometime during the evening and continues to be out.

Wind Event in Upland

On Friday, Jan 20 we had sustained winds of 33 mph with gusts up to 77 mph. The only damage at HHS was to the pepper tree next to the coop. The pepper tree lost one branch.  In the garden, the sunscreen blew down. As a result, the sunscreen (tarps have been removed)

Cont. Work on Sign / Soil Added inside Coop

Work continues inside the coop this week by bringing in wheelbarrows of dirt. The goal is to bring the soil up 2-4 inches within the coop. That is about how much soil has been removed over the years.

Period 2 students continue work on "The Farm" painting.

Potbelly Pigs Update

We have now had the potbelly pigs on the HHS Campus for a little over a month. The pigs are a perfect fit for the farm.  The students love to interact with the pigs. The pigs love to be scratched on their belly!
